Preparing for your Acupuncture Treatment

  • Fill out and submit all new patient forms. Must be submitted 24 hours prior to appointment.
  • Remember to bring your insurance card and/or payment method.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing to your appointment if possible.
  • Always eat a light meal or snack prior to receiving acupuncture.
  • Do not engage in strenuous exercise after your treatment.
  • Stay well hydrated before and after your treatment.

What to Expect

  • Your practitioner will conduct a full medical intake and discuss your health concerns. This will include checking your wrist pulses, tongue diagnosis, and may involve hands on palpation and/or musculoskeletal assessment. An explanation of your individualized acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment plan will also be conducted at this time, including how many treatments your condition may take to show improvement.
  • Your practitioner will have you lie on a massage table and will proceed with an acupuncture treatment while you listen to soothing music. Occasionally patients experience a slight tingling, heavy, burning, pinching, or aching sensation when the needles are first inserted, but this goes away very quickly. Most find acupuncture to be deeply relaxing and often-times patients fall asleep. Your treatment may involve other healing modalities such as cupping, moxibustion heat therapy, guasha, electrical stimulation, and bodywork. All of these will be discussed prior to performing.
  • Once the needles are inserted, your practitioner will leave them in for approximately 20-30 minutes while you rest in the treatment room alone.
  • Your practitioner will write up your treatment plan, including any dietary recommendations, if appropriate. If an herbal formula is prescribed, your acupuncturist will prepare your herbs and directions for how to take them. If any educational materials are needed, those will be included in the treatment plan package as well.
  • The needles will then be removed, and you will likely feel a sense of clarity, well-being, or lightness. Occasionally, some fatigue may follow your treatment, so it is best to not have strenuous activities planned right after. A follow-up appointment is scheduled after a review of the materials prepared for you.
